What nalla neram is and how to pick a time

Nalla neram (Tamil நல்ல நேரம், “good time”) is the everyday muhurta of Tamil Nadu: the windows in a given day when it is favourable to begin something — leave for a journey, open a shop, send an important letter, start a class. Tamil daily calendars print two or three such windows per day. The most widely used source for them is the Gowri panchangam, an eight-period division of daylight whose periods carry names such as Amirtham (nectar), Laabam (gain) and Dhanam (wealth) for the good ones and Rogam (disease), Kantagam (obstacle) and Soram (loss) for the ones to avoid.

The order of the eight periods is fixed but rotates with the weekday, so Monday’s first period is not Sunday’s. Each period is one-eighth of the sunrise-to-sunset span, which is why the Gowri times on this page are computed from Singapore’s own sunrise and sunset rather than copied from a Chennai table. The same division of the day underlies Rahu Kalam and Yamagandam, and a good nalla neram is one that also stays clear of those.

Picking a time in practice: start with the Gowri good periods listed above. Cross them against Rahu Kalam, Yamagandam and Kuligai and drop any overlap. If the task falls in the afternoon, the Abhijit muhurta around local noon is a dependable choice on any weekday. For finer tuning, use the horai: a Jupiter, Venus, Mercury or Moon hour that sits inside a Gowri good period is about as favourable as an ordinary day gets, and the night horai give you good windows after dark, when the Gowri table does not apply.
