What Rahu Kalam means and how to use it
Rahu Kalam (Tamil ராகு காலம், “the time of Rahu”) is a roughly ninety-minute window each day that Tamil and South Indian tradition sets aside as unfavourable for beginnings. It is not an astronomical event: it is one-eighth of the daylight span assigned to the shadow planet Rahu, in a slot that depends only on the weekday. The same rule gives Yamagandam and Kuligai (Gulika Kalam) their slots, which is why the three always sit in different parts of the day.
Because the window is a fraction of daylight, its clock time drifts with the seasons and with your latitude. On a twelve-hour day in Chennai each slot is exactly ninety minutes; in London in June the same slot stretches past two hours, and in December it shrinks below sixty minutes. The times on this page are computed from Toronto’s own sunrise and sunset, so they are the right ones to use there.
What to do with it: the convention is to avoid starting anything new during Rahu Kalam — signing, launching, travelling out, buying, a first meeting. Work already in progress is not interrupted, meals and daily chores are fine, and worship of Durga or Hanuman during Rahu Kalam is in fact recommended in many temples. Yamagandam is treated much the same; Kuligai has the twist that whatever begins in it tends to repeat, so it is chosen for things one wants to recur and avoided for the rest.
When a task cannot wait, the Abhijit muhurta around local noon and the Gowri nalla neram periods offer the day’s reliable good windows; the full panchangam page lists them alongside the planetary hours.
