Sade Sati: Saturn’s Seven and a Half Years, and How to Check Yours
What Sade Sati actually is, the three phases and what each is said to affect, how Ashtama Sani and Kantaka Sani differ, and why it is read from your Moon sign.
Sade Sati is the period when Saturn transits the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from your janma rasi — your Moon sign at birth. Saturn takes roughly two and a half years to cross a sign, so three signs takes about seven and a half years, which is what the name means: sade sati, seven and a half.
The critical detail is the reference point. Sade Sati is measured from your Moon, not your Sun sign and not your lagna. If you have been checking against the sign you know from your birthday, you have almost certainly been reading the wrong period — the two coincide in about one case in twelve.
The three phases
| Phase | Saturn’s position | Duration | Traditionally affects |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rising | 12th from the Moon | ~2½ years | Expenditure, sleep, matters ending |
| Peak | On the Moon (1st) | ~2½ years | The person directly — health, mind, self |
| Setting | 2nd from the Moon | ~2½ years | Family, finances, speech |
The middle phase is conventionally read as the most demanding, since Saturn sits on the natal Moon itself. The first is associated with things winding down and the third with the aftermath and its material consequences. Most descriptions of Sade Sati as uniformly difficult flatten this — the three phases are read quite differently from each other.
Ashtama Sani and Kantaka Sani
Two other Saturn transits carry their own names and are frequently confused with Sade Sati. Neither is part of it — they occur at different points in Saturn’s cycle around your Moon.
- Ashtama Sani — Saturn in the 8th from your Moon, about two and a half years. Read as a period of upheaval and of matters surfacing.
- Kantaka Sani — Saturn in the 4th from your Moon, about two and a half years. The name means “thorn”, and it is associated with domestic and property matters.
- Together with Sade Sati’s three signs, these account for five of the twelve signs Saturn passes through, so a named Saturn phase is running for roughly ten years of every twenty-nine and a half.
Reading it without the melodrama
Sade Sati has a reputation out of proportion to how it is actually read in practice. It is a transit, and a transit describes conditions rather than dictating outcomes. What it produces depends heavily on the rest of the chart.
- Saturn’s dignity matters. Saturn in its own sign or exalted transits very differently from Saturn debilitated.
- The running Vimshottari dasa matters more than the transit in most readings. A favourable dasa during Sade Sati is a different experience from an unfavourable one.
- Saturn is the graha of work, structure and consequence. Periods under it are commonly described as demanding rather than simply unfortunate, and as productive where there is work to do.
- Roughly one in three or four people is in some named Saturn phase at any moment. It is a common condition, not a rare affliction.
On remedies
Remedies are the part of this subject where the most is claimed and the least is agreed. The traditional prescriptions — Saturday observances, Hanuman worship, offerings of sesame and iron, and visits to Saturn temples such as Thirunallar — are widely followed, and they are matters of religious practice rather than of calculation.
Checking Sade Sati in Zodian
Zodian computes your janma rasi from your birth details and classifies Saturn’s current position relative to it, so the phase is identified rather than left for you to work out from a table.
- Janma rasi computed from birth date, time and place — not from your birthday.
- Saturn’s current house from your Moon, with the phase named when it is one of the recognised ones.
- Sade Sati identified by phase — rising, peak or setting — rather than as a single undifferentiated period.
- Ashtama Sani and Kantaka Sani identified separately.
- The same check applied to both charts in the match view, since Saturn transits are read there too.
- The running Vimshottari dasa alongside it, which is the context a transit should be read in.
The transit view shows where every graha stands from your Moon and your lagna, so Saturn’s position sits in context rather than on its own. Zodian runs free in beta on the web at zodian.in, on iOS via TestFlight, and on Android via the Play Store — the same profiles sync across all three.
Frequently asked questions
What is Sade Sati?
Sade Sati is the roughly seven-and-a-half year period when Saturn transits the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from your janma rasi — your Moon sign at birth. Saturn spends about two and a half years in each sign, giving three phases.
How do I check if I am in Sade Sati?
Find your janma rasi, which is the sign the Moon occupied at your birth and must be computed from your birth date, time and place. Then check whether Saturn is currently in that sign, the one before it, or the one after. If so, Sade Sati is running.
Which phase of Sade Sati is worst?
The middle phase, when Saturn sits on the natal Moon, is conventionally read as the most demanding because it affects the person directly. The first phase is associated with endings and expenditure, and the third with family and finances.
Is Ashtama Sani part of Sade Sati?
No. Ashtama Sani is Saturn in the 8th from your Moon and Kantaka Sani is Saturn in the 4th. Both are separate named transits lasting about two and a half years each, occurring at different points in Saturn’s cycle.
How often does Sade Sati occur?
Saturn takes about 29½ years to circle the zodiac, so Sade Sati recurs roughly every 30 years. Most people experience it two or three times in a lifetime, commonly in their twenties, fifties and eighties.
Where can I check my Sade Sati free?
Zodian at zodian.in computes your janma rasi from your birth details and identifies Saturn’s current phase — Sade Sati by phase, Ashtama Sani or Kantaka Sani — alongside your running dasa, free during beta.
