Chevvai Dosham (Manglik): What It Is, How It Is Checked, and Cancellations

Chevvai dosham, Manglik and Kuja dosha are the same condition under different names. Which houses count, why calculators disagree, and the cancellations that are routinely ignored.

Chevvai dosham, Manglik dosha and Kuja dosha are three names for the same thing: Mars occupying particular houses in a birth chart, traditionally held to strain a marriage. Chevvai is the Tamil name for Mars, Kuja the Sanskrit, and Mangal the Hindi. The condition is identical; only the vocabulary and some of the counting conventions differ by region.

It is also the single most over-diagnosed condition in Indian astrology. Depending on which houses a practitioner counts and which reference point they count from, somewhere between a quarter and nearly half of all charts can be labelled affected — and the classical texts carry a long list of cancellations that popular calculators tend to skip entirely.

Which houses count

The core rule is that Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house creates the dosham. The disagreement is over which houses to include and what to count from.

HouseReasoningAgreement
1stMars on the lagna — temperament and assertionUniversal
2ndThe family and speech houseSouth Indian practice; often omitted in the north
4thDomestic happinessUniversal
7thThe marriage house itselfUniversal
8thLongevity and the marriage’s hidden mattersUniversal
12thLoss, expenditure, the bedUniversal
The 2nd house is the main regional difference. Including it materially raises how many charts are flagged, which is part of why a Tamil reading and a north Indian one can disagree on the same chart.

The second variable is the reference point. Most practitioners count from the lagna. Many also check from the Moon, and some from Venus as the significator of marriage. A chart clear from the lagna but afflicted from the Moon will be called Manglik by one calculator and clear by another — and both are following a defensible convention.

Why two calculators give different answers

  • Whether the 2nd house is counted at all.
  • Whether the check runs from the lagna only, or also from the Moon and Venus.
  • Whether cancellations are applied before reporting, or not applied at all.
  • Whether the chart uses the same ayanamsa — a borderline Mars near a house boundary can move.

The cancellations

Classical sources list numerous conditions under which the dosham is considered cancelled or substantially reduced. Popular calculators frequently omit these, which is the main reason the condition appears far more common than practitioners treat it as being.

  • Mars in its own sign (Aries, Scorpio) or exalted in Capricorn is generally held to be neutralised.
  • Mars aspected by or conjunct Jupiter is widely treated as mitigated.
  • When both charts carry the dosham, it is conventionally held to cancel between them — the most frequently applied cancellation in matching.
  • Some lineages hold the dosham to weaken with age, and treat it as materially reduced after roughly 28.
  • Placement in certain signs is held to nullify it, though the sign lists differ between traditions.

The honest position is that this is a genuinely contested area. There is no single authoritative list of cancellations, and practitioners who take the dosham seriously and practitioners who consider it heavily over-applied are both working from the tradition.

How it is used in matching

In practice the dosham is checked for both charts and the pair is read together, not separately. The three outcomes are both clear, both affected — which is conventionally treated as cancelling — and one affected while the other is not, which is the case that actually causes concern.

It is worth keeping perspective on where this sits. Chevvai dosham is one check outside the matching system proper, and it does not enter the ten poruthams or the 36-point Guna Milan score. A pair can pass matching comfortably and be flagged here, or fail matching with both charts clear.

Chevvai dosham in Zodian

Zodian checks Chevvai dosham for both charts inside the match view and reports the pair’s combined position rather than two isolated verdicts.

  • Chevvai dosham assessed for each chart, with the pair read as both clear, both affected, or mismatched.
  • Rahu-Ketu dosham checked alongside it.
  • Saturn’s current transit over both charts — Sade Sati, Ashtama Sani and Kantaka Sani.
  • All ten poruthams reported separately, so the dosha checks and the matching stay distinguishable.

Honest caveat: Zodian follows the South Indian convention, which includes the 2nd house. If you have been read as clear elsewhere and Zodian flags you, that difference is the most likely reason. A dosham reading is a prompt to consult a practitioner, not a verdict on a marriage. Zodian runs free in beta on the web at zodian.in, on iOS via TestFlight, and on Android via the Play Store — the same profiles sync across all three.

Frequently asked questions

What is Chevvai dosham?

Chevvai dosham is the condition where Mars occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of a birth chart, traditionally held to strain marriage. Chevvai is the Tamil name for Mars. The same condition is called Manglik dosha in the north and Kuja dosha in Sanskrit.

Is Manglik the same as Chevvai dosham?

Yes — Manglik, Kuja dosha and Chevvai dosham are the same condition under different regional names. The main practical difference is that South Indian practice counts the 2nd house while many north Indian readings omit it.

Why do two apps give me different Manglik results?

Usually one of four reasons: whether the 2nd house is counted, whether the check runs from the lagna alone or also from the Moon and Venus, whether cancellations are applied, and which ayanamsa was used if Mars sits near a house boundary.

Does Manglik dosha cancel if both partners have it?

That is the most widely applied cancellation — when both charts carry the dosham it is conventionally held to cancel between them. Several other cancellations are also recognised, including Mars in its own sign or in Capricorn, and Mars conjunct or aspected by Jupiter.

How serious is Chevvai dosham?

It is contested. The condition is over-diagnosed by calculators that omit the classical cancellations, and many practitioners treat it as far less decisive than popular accounts suggest. It is one check sitting outside the matching systems, not a verdict on a marriage.

Where can I check Chevvai dosham free?
