The 10 Poruthams in Tamil Marriage Matching, Explained
What each of the ten poruthams checks, which ones elders treat as non-negotiable, why the count alone misleads, and how to read a porutham result honestly.
Tamil marriage matching (தச பொருத்தம்) checks ten specific compatibilities between two horoscopes, computed mainly from each person’s birth nakshatra and rasi. Families usually ask for the count — "how many out of ten?" — but the poruthams are not equal weights: traditionally rajju and dinam carry far more weight than a miss on ganam or yoni, so a 6/10 with the vital ones intact can be a better match than an 8/10 without them.
The ten checks, one by one
| Porutham | Checks | Traditionally read for |
|---|---|---|
| Dinam | Count between nakshatras | Day-to-day health and wellbeing |
| Ganam | Nakshatra temperament class | Temperamental match |
| Mahendram | Specific nakshatra counts | Progeny and family growth |
| Stree Deergham | Distance of boy’s star ahead of girl’s | The wife’s prosperity |
| Yoni | Nakshatra animal symbol | Physical compatibility |
| Rasi | Relative rasi positions | Household harmony |
| Rasi Athipathi | Friendship of the two rasi lords | Aligned outlooks |
| Vasiyam | Mutual attraction pairs of rasis | Natural pull between the two |
| Rajju | Nakshatra body-segment class | Longevity of the union — the one elders refuse to waive |
| Vedhai | Afflicting nakshatra pairs | Absence of inherent obstruction |
Why the score alone misleads
The ten checks answer different questions with different stakes. Rajju porutham failing is treated across most Tamil traditions as a hard stop regardless of the other nine; vedhai similarly. Meanwhile ganam and yoni are temperament indicators that many elders will happily argue past when the rest of the picture is strong. A bare count flattens all of that.
- Read the verdict per porutham, not the total.
- Check rajju and vedhai first; if either fails, the conversation changes.
- Treat dinam, rasi and rasi athipathi as the quality-of-daily-life cluster.
- Remember porutham is nakshatra-level screening — a full reading still compares the two charts (kuja dosham, dasa overlap, 7th houses).
Zodian’s Marriage Porutham screen computes all ten from both charts, shows each verdict separately with the reason, and renders fully in Tamil or English — so a family sees which poruthams hold, not just a number. Zodian runs free in beta on the web at zodian.in, on iOS via TestFlight, and on Android via the Play Store — the same profiles sync across all three.
Frequently asked questions
How many poruthams are needed for marriage?
Convention treats 6+ of 10 as acceptable — but only if rajju (and usually vedhai) pass. Most elders reject a match with rajju dosham even at 8/10, and accept a 5–6 with the vital poruthams intact.
What is rajju porutham and why is it critical?
Rajju groups the 27 nakshatras into five body-segment classes. Bride and groom sharing the same rajju class is traditionally read as endangering the longevity of the union, which is why it is the one check most families refuse to waive.
Is 10-porutham the same as the 36-guna matching?
No. The 36-guna (ashtakoota) system is the North Indian method with eight weighted kootas summing to 36 points. The Tamil system checks ten pass/fail poruthams. They overlap in spirit but score differently — know which one your report used.
Can I check porutham online for free?
Yes — Zodian’s Marriage Porutham tool at zodian.in computes all ten poruthams from both birth details, free during beta, in Tamil and English.
